A dog was fatally shot by an officer as police pursed an assault suspect in the Manassas area, according to Prince William County Police.

Chris Leroy Downs Jr., 40, of 9108 Carlo St in Manassas, is charged with attempted malicious wounding, domestic assault and battery and grand larceny.

At 9:43 p.m. Friday, an officer had responded to a report of a domestic dispute. The victim, 44, of Manassas, told police that she was in an argument with the suspect when he allegedly struck her in the head.

When a family member, 44, of Manassas, tried to intervene, the suspect allegedly attempted to stab him, according to police.

The suspect fled on foot and took the woman’s pit bull with him, according to police.

While searching the woods nearby, an officer and police K9 encountered the dog. The animal reportedly charged aggressively at the officer and K9 twice. It was shot by an officer and died at the scene.

The suspect was taken into custody. Minor injures were reported to the victim.
