Missing WWII Soldier Buried at Quantico Cemetery: 1 Year Ago in Manassas

The remains of an Army soldier from Manassas missing since World War II are being returned to Virginia, the Pentagon announced Wednesday.

Private First Class Richard Bean was 24 when he went missing in July 1944 after Japanese forces launched a suicide assault on Bean’s unit, the 105th Infantry Regiment, during the Battle of Saipan, The Associated Press reports.

The Pentagon said Wednesday the remains of Bean were recovered last year by Japanese groups and identified through dental records and DNA analysis.

Bean will be buried with full military honors in Quantico National Cemetery on Oct. 3.
