Update: Worker Killed in Collapse Inside Warehouse Freezer

A shelving unit fell and pinned workers at Reinhart Foodservice Tuesday afternoon, authorities say.

MANASSAS, VA - One person died and several others were injured Tuesday after a shelving unit collapsed inside a freezer at a warehouse in the Manassas area, according to the Prince William County police.

Officer Jonathan Perok, a police spokesman, confirmed that one worker died and five others were being treated for their injuries. He said the police could not identify the worker who died until the next of kin are notified.

The Washington Post reported that a rack inside the freezer fell at about 3:40 p.m. and killed a worker at Reinhart Foodservice, 11777 Balls Ford Road, near Interstate 66 (see map below).

A Prince William fire official told the Post that seven workers were injured, including two who suffered serious injuries, when the rack fell and pinned them. Four workers were taken to a local hospital, he said.

The rack that fell was about 30 feet high and about 200 feet long, a Prince William County fire battalion chief told radio station WTOP. He said that all workers had been accounted for.

Along with police and firefighters, a building official was at the scene, along with officials from the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
