2 McLean Schools Win Governor’s Award For Educational Excellence
The schools were among five statewide receiving the top Virginia Index of Performance award.
MCLEAN, VA—Two McLean schools have won a top award from the state. Chesterbrook Elementary School and Cooper Middle School were among five Virginia schools to receive the 2019 Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence.
The award is the highest recognition in the Virginia Index of Performance awards. The VIP awards recognize schools and divisions that exceed state and federal accountability standards and meet goals of excellence set by the governor and state board of education. The excellence goals, if applicable to the grade level, include elementary reading, enrollment in Algebra I by the eighth grade, enrollment in college-level courses, high school graduation, attainment of advanced diplomas, increased attainment of career and industry certifications and participation in the Virginia Preschool Initiative.
Four of the five award recipients were from Fairfax County Public Schools. The others were Carson Middle School in Herndon and Longfellow Middle School in Falls Church, as well as Jamestown Elementary School in Arlington.

Twenty-eight other Fairfax County schools won Board of Education Excellence Awards: Chantilly High, Churchill Road Elementary, Colvin Run Elementary, Floris Elementary, Forestville Elementary, Greenbriar West Elementary, Haycock Elementary, Keene Mill Elementary, Lake Braddock Secondary, Langley High, Madison High, Mantua Elementary, McLean High, Mosby Woods Elementary, Oak Hill Elementary, Oakton High, Poplar Tree Elementary, Robinson Secondary, Rocky Run Middle, Sangster Elementary, Spring Hill Elementary, Springfield Estates Elementary, Thomas Jefferson High for Science and Technology, West Springfield High, Westbriar Elementary, Willow Springs Elementary, Wolftrap Elementary and Woodson High. The award recognizes schools that meet state and federal accountability benchmarks and make significant progress toward student achievement and expanded student opportunity goals.
Twenty-two Fairfax County schools earned the Board of Education’s Distinguished Achievement Awards: Belvedere Elementary, Camelot Elementary, Canterbury Woods Elementary, Centreville High, Crossfield Elementary, Fairfax High, Flint Hill Elementary, Fox Mill Elementary, Franklin Sherman Elementary, Frost Middle, Great Falls Elementary, Kilmer Middle, Lees Corner Elementary, Louise Archer Elementary, Marshall High, Navy Elementary, Oakton Elementary, Terra Centre Elementary, Thoreau Middle, Wakefield Forest Elementary, Waynewood Elementary, and West Springfield Elementary. The award honored schools that meet state and federal benchmarks and make progress toward the governor and Virginia Board of Education's goals.
