BASIS Ind. McLean Student Earns First Place in Mandarin Contest
Tysons Corner School Wins Washington Metropolitan Association of Chinese Schools Competition

BASIS Independent McLean (BIM) students, Charan Ravikumar (grade 11) and Maria-Teresa Tozzi (grade 10) earned first place and third place, respectively, in the first Mandarin Chinese Speech Contest, hosted by the Washington Metropolitan Association of Chinese Schools (WMACS). “Charan and Maria are outstanding students, and we’re so proud of their achievements at WMACS,” said Tiffany Conroy, interim head of school of BASIS Independent McLean of McLean, Va. “Foreign language is a fundamental core class in our schools, as we see the future landscape for our students as a global one,” said Conroy.
BASIS Independent McLean Mandarin teacher, Maggie Li , coached Ravikumar and Tozzi in preparation for the contest.

As the first place winner, Ravikumar was invited to attend a celebration in October, hosted by the Taiwanese American Diversity Associates in Greenbelt, Md.

WMACS is an organization of Chinese language schools in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. WMACS facilitates communication among its member schools and is a member association of the National Council of Associations of Chinese Language Schools.
