BASIS Ind McLean Students;Semifinalists in 2020 Nat'l Merit
McLean Students Score in Top One Percent for PSAT
Students of BASIS Independent McLean’s (BIM) Jackson Edelmann and Ethan Hsaio, both seniors placed as semifinalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program, by scoring in the top one percent for PSAT scores during their junior years. Thirteen BIM seniors were named Commended Students by the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program, including: Tad Berkery, Lieselotte Dubert, Miller Hollinger, Kiran James, Pendaar Pooyan, Avinash Sanghavi, Bhavjeet Sanghera, Nathan Shin, Aanika Singh, Kamil Urbanowski, Alan Yu, Andy Zhang and Shang Zhang.

All semifinalists now have the opportunity to compete for a finalist position, which could lead to securing a National Merit Scholarship. To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship, semifinalists have to fulfill requirements to advance to finalist standing. Each semifinalist submits a detailed scholarship application, which includes essays and information about extracurricular achievements, awards and leadership positions. Semifinalists also have to have an outstanding academic record, be endorsed and recommended by a school official and earn SAT scores that confirm their qualifying test performance.
