BASIS Independent McLean 11th Grader Wins National Travel Award
McLean Student Wins 2019 Junior Study Abroad Scholarship for Travel to Spain

Ethan Hsaio, an 11th grader at BASIS Independent McLean (BIM) in McLean, Va., has won the 2019 Junior Study Abroad Scholarship for his achievement on the National Spanish Examination and for his excellent skills in the Spanish language. This national award, valued at more than $3,500, is given each year to 24 students in the United States who become eligible by earning high scores on the National Spanish Examination, and then submitting samples of their written and oral work in Spanish to a selection committee.
In July, Hsaio will be traveling to Spain with the other 23 winners to study the Spanish language and culture at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in Spain.

“This is a very exciting opportunity for Ethan, and we’re so proud to see him acknowledged for his passion and determination in learning the Spanish language,” said Sara Conyers, director of student affairs for grades 8 to 12 of BASIS Independent McLean in McLean, Va.
“This two-week immersion program is designed to allow our top students to study university-level material during 90-minutes classes and then go on an excursion to see firsthand what they’ve learned in class, ” said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, director of the National Spanish Examinations.

BASIS Independent McLean has participated in the National Spanish Examination for three years. Hsaio is taught by BIM Spanish teachers, Monica Isquith, Ashley Angelovich and Matthew Hunt.
