Cold Air, Full Lungs, Can't Breathe?

Winter is the season for asthma flair-ups. Here are some tips to breathe easier.

For many people with asthma, winter isn’t a wonderland. Between the cold weather and increased time indoors, wintertime can mean more asthma flare-ups.

WebMD offers the following tips for breathing easier in the winter months:

  • Learn your triggers – once you know what may trigger an asthma attack (such as pets, mold and dust mites), you can take steps to minimize your exposure
  • Stay healthy – the flu and common cold can trigger asthma symptoms. So be sure to wash your hands, keep your distance from people who are ill and get a flu shot.
  • Avoid cold air – when you are outdoors, wear a scarf or face mask that covers your mouth and nose. If you know that cold air is a trigger, take one or two puffs from your rescue inhaler before going outside.

Remember, it is important to stay on your personal asthma action plan year round and take your regular preventative medicines as prescribed by your doctor.
