Fairfax County Schools Make Decision For Jan. 29 Classes

The county will be under a winter weather advisory with potentially hazardous conditions during Tuesday evening's commute.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA—Fairfax County Public Schools will close two hours early Tuesday, Jan. 29 with hazardous winter weather expected to move in the afternoon. The school district attributed the early release to anticipated freezing rain and snow, as well as worsening travel conditions Tuesday afternoon and evening.

The early closure also applies to offices. Other schedule changes include:

  • Morning preschool (special education) classes will be dismissed around 11 a.m.
  • Full-day preschool (special education) and Family and Early Childhood Education Program/Head Start classes are dismissed two hours earlier than the usual time.
  • Afternoon preschool (special education) classes are canceled.
  • School Age Child Care (SACC) centers will be open until 6:15 p.m. Parents are asked to pick up children earlier when possible.
  • All late buses are canceled.
  • These activities in schools and on school grounds are canceled: extracurricular activities, interscholastic contests, team practices, field trips, middle school after-school programs, professional learning and training courses, adult and community education classes, recreation programs and community uses by non-FCPS groups.

Fairfax County is under a winter weather advisory from noon to 10 p.m. Tuesday. Forecasters expect rain will turn into snow with 1 to 3 inches of accumulation. As temperatures fall below freezing in the evening, water and slush could freeze on untreated roads or sidewalks. Drivers should plan for hazardous conditions on the roads for the evening commute.
