Fuel Spill From Truck Results In Capital Beltway Backups

MCLEAN, VA—A large fuel spill from a tanker truck impacted Capital Beltway traffic in the McLean area Wednesday afternoon.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue said the fuel spill happened on northbound Interstate 495 before Georgetown Pike. As of 2 p.m. units have stopped the leak. The fire department does not believe the leak entered a nearby creek.

Three travel lanes were temporarily closed. The last of the closed lanes was set to reopen, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue tweeted at 2:42 p.m. Drivers should expect delays.

The incident comes nearly a week after an overturned tanker truck closed the northbound Beltway for over half a day near the American Legion Bridge. The crash caused 8,500 gallons of fuel to spill, prompting a cleanup stretching into the early morning. A driver from Woodbridge was cited for the crash.
