Go Up Swinging

BASEBALL SEASON OPENS IN THE SPRING.

The real estate spring selling season too is in full swing.

“Calico Joe” is a novel by John Grisham about baseball. In the book, when one of the ball players was heading to the batter’s box to hit, he is told to “go up there swinging”. This encouragement in baseball jargon means to not just stand there and watch pitches fly by. It means to be the kind of player that makes something out of each pitch thrown. Even if the pitches are not very good or even hard to swing at. This player goes up to the plate and makes something happen.

Baseball is as American as mom, apple pie and home ownership. Top real estate agents see the relationship between being a Realtor® that is proactive and the ballplayer in Grisham’s book. The agent exudes passion! She plays to win! Some agents and ball players just sit back and wait for the business or ball to come to them. An agent that goes up there swinging actively pursues all leads, even if it requires a great deal of legwork and perseverance.

An example of “go up swinging” was a referral to our team from a preferred vendor for a short term rental. My business partner Lizzy Conroy took care of those people in such a professional manner that they in turn had her list a piece of land owned by the family. That listing led to two neighbors also hiring Lizzy to represent them. One of the buyers who purchased the lot to build a new home was so impressed with the professionalism, hired Lizzy for that transaction as well. Oftentimes the important thing in baseball is to get on base which can lead to more opportunity that eventually results in a score.

The agent that “goes up there swinging” when representing a Purchaser does more than just setting the customer up for automatic notifications. He previews homes and neighborhoods that might be a good fit. She actively networks with agents in her office and Realtor® community about listings that may be “coming soon.” The agent strategies with his client to develop a winning strategy on offer presentation, particularly in the case of multiple offers and homes that are in high demand.

The professional who “goes up swinging” is proactive. The agent takes action to make something happen. Even when the market is difficult and the situation is challenging, this professional makes the best of what comes across the plate.
