McLean Students to Compete in National Science Olympiad

The Science Olympiad Team at Longfellow Middle School won their sixth straight Virginia title.

MCLEAN, VA -- Longfellow Middle School won its sixth straight Virginia Science Olympiad Tournament for Division B and will compete at the national level.

Students will travel to the national competition at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio from May 19-20.

Participating students include Reevu Adadroy, Tammy Ding, Pulak Dugar, Julia Feldhaus, Jessica Feng, Vishal Kanigicherla, Julia Kao-Sowa, Kari Naga, Marian Qian, Sahana Ramesh, Neil Shah, Rupa Siva, Caroline Sun, Gabriel Witkop, Miranda Xiong, Michelle Du, Elaine Li, Pratyush Jaishanker and Varun Chilukuri.

Students from third to twelfth grade can compete in Science Olympiad. The competition allows students interested in science and technology to compete in team events. Longfellow placed in the top ten of the 25 events, including 11 first place finishes. Events cover high school level subjects like anatomy and astronomy.

All top 10 finishes were from Fairfax County, including two more McLean schools.

  • 5 - Rocky Run Middle School, Chantilly

  • 7 - South County Middle School, Lorton
  • 8 - Louise Archer Elementary School, Vienna
  • 9 - Churchill Road Elementary School, McLean
  • 10 - Langston Hughes Middle School, Reston

On the Division C level, Fairfax High School is moving on to the national competition.
