NoVA, Southwest VA Report Same Number Of New Coronavirus Cases

Three regions, including Northern Virginia, have positive averages of tests below 6 percent.

VIRGINIA — On Tuesday, the Virginia Department of Health reported 23 deaths of coronavirus patients and 1,005 additional coronavirus cases, bringing the total to 114,635 cases. There have been 2,494 total deaths and 9,259 hospitalizations.

Virginia's new cases included 246 in the eastern region, 236 each in the northern and southwest regions, 174 in the central region, and 113 in the northwest region. Tuesday marked the third highest number of daily cases for the southwest region. The 7-day moving average of new cases for the entire state is 908.

The 8.4 percent average of positive tests in the eastern region remains above the 6.4 percent statewide average as of Aug. 21. However, the region's average is an improvement after increases in July, which reached 12.2 percent n July 18. Other regions have averages below the statewide average — 6.2 percent in the central region, 5.9 percent in the northern region, 5.6 percent in the southwest region, and 5.5 percent in the northwest region. The number of PCR tests completed in Virginia is 1,495,014, up 15,897 from Monday.

The average of daily deaths reported has fluctuated in Virginia, but data on the deaths by date on the death certificate could provide better insight. So far, it looks like the peak average of deaths per day happened in early May, although data may be incomplete for recent weeks due to reporting delays.

There are 1,174 COVID-19 patients currently hospitalized across Virginia. That includes 144 on ventilators and 273 in the intensive care units, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association. The breakdown by region is 392 in the eastern region, 265 in the northern region, 247 in the central region, 160 in the southwest region, and 110 in the northwest region. To date, 14,581 COVID-19 patients have been discharged from hospitals.

Ventilator use among all hospital patients is at 20 percent, while intensive care units are at 71 percent occupancy. The ICU occupancy is just 4 percent higher than Virginia's 2019 average for ICU occupancy (67 percent). One hospital is reporting difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment in the next 72 hours, but no hospitals are having difficulty obtaining other medical supplies.

  • Alexandria: 3,309 cases, 294 hospitalizations, 61 deaths; increase of 39 cases and one hospitalization
  • Arlington County: 3,415 cases, 452 hospitalizations, 138 deaths; increase of 15 cases, three hospitalizations and one death
  • Fairfax County: 17,784 cases, 2,012 hospitalizations, 547 deaths; increase of 55 cases and four deaths, two hospitalizations removed
  • Fairfax City: 106 cases, 13 hospitalizations, seven deaths; no changes
  • Falls Church: 66 cases, 11 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of two cases and one hospitalization
  • Loudoun County: 5,769 cases, 369 hospitalizations, 115 deaths; increase of 34 cases and three hospitalizations
  • Manassas: 1,769 cases, 126 hospitalizations, 23 deaths; increase of 11 cases and one hospitalization
  • Manassas Park: 554 cases, 52 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of two cases
  • Prince William County: 10,470 cases, 839 hospitalizations, 183 deaths; increase of 78 cases and three hospitalizations
  • Fredericksburg: 455 cases, 47 hospitalizations, four deaths; increase of two cases
  • Spotsylvania County: 1,730 cases, 109 hospitalizations, 37 deaths; increase of 22 cases and one hospitalization
  • Stafford County: 1,612 cases, 135 hospitalizations, 10 deaths; increase of 10 cases and one hospitalization
