The Board of Supervisors could approve a body camera program for police this month.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA—Fairfax County Police could start testing a body camera program soon, if the Board of Supervisors approves it. The Board of Supervisors is set to vote on the pilot program at its Nov. 21 meeting.

“Our board is supportive of having-body worn cameras,” Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova said at a community meeting, WTOP reports.

Bulova says the program would start 100 days after Board of Supervisors approval and be tested for 90 days. The pilot will run with officers in the Mount Vernon and Mason Police Districts. The estimated pilot program cost is $676,152.

Police Chief Edwin Roessler Jr. said the program can be tweaked as it goes on.

“The body-worn camera program that is proposed right now is a lead example of the coproduction of policing,” Roessler said, according to WTOP. “We have a draft policy for the officers of when to turn it on, when to turn it off, that was produced with community stakeholders, especially those from mental health, schools and other agencies."
