U.S. Rep. Boyle Introduces 'Stable Genius' Act
The "Stable Genius" Act would require presidential candidates to go through a medical screening.

Montgomery County's U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-13) has introduced a new bill in Congress that would require presidential candidates to go through a medical screening before being elected to office.
The "Stable Genius Act" specifically targets President Trump's mental health, and is an acronym for "Standardizing, Testing, and Accountability Before Large Elections Giving Electors Necessary Information for Unobstructed Selection."
The acronym satirizes President Trump's recent remarks on Twitter in defense of his mental health after a a recent book about Trump and his campaign leveled new accusations.

"Actually, throughout my life, my two greatest assets have been mental stability and being, like, really smart," President Trump wrote on Sunday. "Crooked Hillary Clinton also played these cards very hard and, as everyone knows, went down in flames. I went from VERY successful businessman, to top T.V. Star...to President of the United States (on my first try). I think that would qualify as not smart, but genius....and a very stable genius at that!"
Trump sent out the tweets that day after Michael Wolff's much talked-about new book was released, "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House." Wolff is a former New York magazine columnist who covered the White House and said he interviewed top White House aides who feared Trump was unfit for the job. Former White House adviser Steve Bannon was a key source for the book. Trump fired Bannon last year.

Trump's lawyers sent Wolff and his publisher Henry Holt cease-and-desist letters, threatening them not to publish the book. In response, Henry Holt published the book Friday, Jan. 5 instead of its scheduled release date later this month.

The legislation would require that all presidential candidates be examined by a medical officer supervised by the Secretary of Navy, and that the results of the examination be publicized before the election commences.
Pennsylvania's 13th Congressional district covers much of Montgomery County and parts of Philadelphia.
