Marjory Stoneman Douglas Students Sing 'Rent' Song At The Tonys
The kids sang "Seasons of Love" to honor their heroic theater teacher who protected dozens of students from an armed gunman.
NEW YORK CITY — Drama Students from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School — the Parkland, Florida, school where an armed gunman shot 17 people dead on Valentine's Day — sang "Seasons of Love" at the Tonys to honor a theater teacher who saved dozens of lives.
The students performed a classic from the musical "Rent" at the 2018 Tony Awards on Sunday night to honor Melody Herzfeld, who barricaded 65 students inside a classroom closet during the February 14 shooting.
Herzfeld was awarded the 2018 Excellence in Theatre Education Award, an honor given to theater teachers that "demonstrated monumental impact on the lives of students."

"Next to the passing of my dear parents and in-laws, marrying the love of my life, the birth of my amazing sons, and reunifying with all of my theater students on February 26th, there has never been a more defining moment in my life," said Herzfeld in her acceptance speech. "I am humbly thankful."
