- Children should only visit homes that have their porch lights on.
- Inspect your children’s candy before they eat it, especially for those with food allergies (some people use teal pumpkins to distribute allergy-free treats).
- Adults or older children should supervise those under age 12.
- Make sure children know their phone number and address — and to provide this information to a police officer in an emergency.
- Plan and discuss the trick-or-treat route you will take. If you're on Nextdoor, check the treat map to see which neighbors will be handing out candy.
- Establish a time for children to return home.
- Teach children to travel in familiar areas, stop only at well-lit houses and never enter a stranger's home.
- Stay on sidewalks and avoid walking in streets, if possible. Cross streets only at the corner and never cross between parked vehicles or mid-block.
- When trick-or-treating, use battery-powered lights, keep your devices charged and pick a place to meet if you get lost.
Authorities also urge drivers to stay under the speed limit in residential areas, in case trick-or-treaters may dart out in front of cars.

McLean 2017 Halloween Sex Offender Safety Map
Before the kids go out trick or treating on Halloween, it is a good time to take inventory of who is living in your neighborhood. According to the Virginia Sex Offender Registry, there are nine registered sex offenders living in McLean. The registry, maintained by the Virginia State Police, goes by U.S. Postal Service mailing address, and not all were convicted in Fairfax County or the state of Virginia. The map is not meant to discourage trick-or-treating, as there are restrictions in place for sex offenders on Halloween. Those on probation with restrictions related to contact with children are not permitted to pass out candy during trick-or-treat. Offenders must keep their porch lights off and not open their doors to trick-or-treaters.
