Virginia Is Not For Environment Lovers: State Rankings

Virginia does not score as well as neighboring Maryland for eco-friendly practices, according to new state rankings.

MCLEAN, VA -- Virginia is ranked the 31st greenest state in a new WalletHub study.

The state scored 54.55 out off 100 on based on factors such as air, water and soil quality, LEED-certified buildings per capita, energy from renewable sources, energy consumption per capita and waste per capita.

Virginia was not in the top five for best or worst in all but one category. Virginia ranked 15th on climate change contributions, but it lost more points on eco-friendly behaviors. The state has the third highest municipal solid waste per capita.

The study used 20 metrics to rank the 50 states. Neighboring Maryland ranked 11th overall.
