Watch: Comstock Opponent's Ad Dubbed Worst Ad Of 2018 Midterms

A Democrat running against Barbara Comstock has gone viral—but not for a good reason.

MCLEAN, VA—If you didn't know Dan Helmer, a Democrat running against Republican Barbara Comstock for Congress, you do now. But not for the reason he'd hoped for.

Helmer's new campaign ad is being called the worst of the 2018 midterms so far. The ad is a parody of the bar scene from "Top Gun," where Maverick sings "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" to Charlie. Helmer's karaoke song, sung to a person implied to be Comstock, comes across as awkward.

Many have let the candidate know on social media:

Even The Late Show's Stephen Colbert summed up the disaster with this: "This race is one he can actually win, unless anyone sees his new campaign ad."

Helmer, an army veteran that has served in Iraq and Afghanistan, is among a handful of Democrats vying for Comstock's seat in Virginia's 10th Congressional District. The district, encompassing parts of Northern Virginia including McLean, Loudoun County and Manassas, is considered a battleground race. Comstock beat out Democratic opponent LuAnn Bennett in the 2016 election.
