Alexandria Driver Collides With Police Cruiser, Charged With DWI

No serious injuries reported in Saturday night accident in Hybla Valley, say Fairfax County police.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — An Alexandria motorist is facing DWI and other charges after his car collided with a Fairfax County police cruiser Saturday night on Route 1 in the Hybla Valley area.

Toney Sampson, 31, was taken into custody after police officers arrived at the scene of the collision and saw him walking around his car. Sampson "appeared to be unsteady on his feet," a police report stated; the officers smelled alcohol and conducted field sobriety tests.

As a result, Sampson was charged with driving while intoxicated, refusal, possession of marijuana and failing to yield the right of way, according to the police.

At about 8:20 p.m. Saturday, an officer was driving his marked 2009 Ford Taurus northbound on Richmond Highway (Route 1) near Arlington Drive. At the same time, Sampson was driving a 2013 Hyundai Sonata south on Richmond Highway.

As he approached Arlington Drive, Sampson turned in front of the cruiser, and the cars collided in the intersection. "Fortunately, the officer was not injured and immediately checked on the other driver," the police report stated.

"We are thankful that all parties involved in this incident were not seriously injured," the statement added.
