Historic Mount Vernon Presents Lecture Series

The series will discuss the life of George Washington during his tenure as the first president of the United States.

Beginning in September, will present "George Washington, Philadelphia, and the Emergence of America’s First National Politician," a lecture series about Washington’s rise from politician to the first president of the United States.

Each lecture will be presented by Gay Hart Gaines Distinguished Visiting Fellow in American History Richard R. Beeman. Beeman is the John Walsh Centennial professor of history and has been a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania for more than 40 years.

The lecture series kicks off on Sept. 18 with “A Virginia Provincial Politician Appears on the Continental Stage,” a lecture discussing George Washington’s journey from provincial politician to national political leader. The second lecture, “George Washington and the Constitutional Convention of 1787” will be held on Oct. 16. Professor Beeman will discuss George Washington’s significant contributions to the Continental Constitution’s success. The third and final lecture, “The Anguish of America’s First President,” will explore Washington’s personal challenges he faced during his tenure as the nation’s first president. That lecture will take place on Nov. 13. All lectures will take place at 7 p.m.

A series subscription costs $150 ($125 for members and donors). All programs will take place in the Robert H. and Clarice Smith Auditorium at Historic Mount Vernon. Receptions and book signings will follow each lecture. For more information, please call 703-799-8686.
