Lamp Causes Fire at Mount Vernon Area Home

Family of five displaced by fire that did $93,000 worth of damage to home, according to Fairfax County Fire & Rescue.

Fairfax County Fire & Rescue firefighters responded to a townhouse condominium fire Wednesday, in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County. The single-home is located in the 8600 block of Village Square Drive (see map below).

Firefighters found smoke and fire coming from the two-story, end unit home when they arrived, the fire department said. Firefighters conducted an aggressive fire attack and quickly brought the fire under control, the department said.

The occupants were not at home when the fire broke out. The home had a working smoke alarm. Three adults and two children have been displaced. Support is being provided by Red Cross. There were no injuries.

Damage is estimated at $93,000.

According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. A lamp in a second floor bedroom fell over and ignited combustible materials causing the fire.
