Rowell Runs to Athlete of the Week

Mount Vernon senior Katja Rowell finished last week's National District cross-country meet in fifth place with a time of 19:24.

Her efforts earned her a spot in the VHSL AAA Northern Region meet on Thursday, as well as Mount Vernon Patch's Athlete of the Week.

Rowell moved here from Wisconsin over the summer, and immediately noticed a difference in the level of competition.

"It's so much faster here," she said. "My first meet this year was so much faster than the state meet I was in in Wisconsin."

The Majors came in fifth as a team, just barely on the outside looking in, so Rowell will be their only representation at regionals. The meet is at Burke Lake Park at 4 p.m.
