Second suspect arrested in connection with July 2026 homicide on Teardrop Lane in Newport News (wavy.com) — Police have arrested a 16-year-old as the second suspect in the July 17 shooting on Teardrop Lane in Newport News that killed 19-year-old Jason Hernandez and injured another man. The teen faces first-degree murder, robbery, and multiple firearm-related charges, following the earlier arrest of 18-year-old Newport News resident Edward Barcus in connection with the same incident.

3. Hampton Roads Transit ridership reaches 10 million boardings (wtkr.com) — Newport News riders are increasingly using Hampton Roads Transit's OnDemand service, which logged more than 82,000 trips last fiscal year as overall regional ridership topped 10 million boardings. With a new CEO arriving soon and a 2027 system optimization plan on the horizon, local bus routes and on-demand coverage could be reshaped, potentially changing how residents commute, attend events, and get around town.
   

4. More than $2 million in SNAP benefits reported stolen in Hampton Roads, as Virginia rolls out new EBT cards (13newsnow.com) — Newport News SNAP recipients are among the hardest hit in Virginia by stolen benefits, with tens of thousands of dollars in fraud reported and no government reimbursement. As the state rolls out new chip-enabled EBT cards this fall, local users are urged to update their contact information, activate new cards promptly, and use security features to better protect their food assistance.
   

5. NN jury to begin deliberations Monday for father charged with murder of mother and daughter (wavy.com) — A Newport News jury is set to begin deliberations Monday in the murder trial of Carlos Johnson Jr., accused in the 2017 disappearance and presumed deaths of Keir Johnson and her infant daughter Chloe. Jurors heard extensive digital evidence and disturbing search histories, and will soon decide whether to convict on first-degree murder or consider lesser charges that could still bring a lengthy prison term.
