📰 News we're reading

1. Without working elevator, NN family struggles to get around (wavy.com) — A Newport News family in Denbigh Village Apartments says a broken elevator has left a wheelchair user essentially trapped on the second floor for seven weeks, forcing church members to carry him down stairs for medical appointments. After they contacted local TV, management said parts are on order and hopes the elevator will be working by Monday, but offered no firm promise.

2. Fire shuts down Newport News Walmart for the day — and maybe longer (pilotonline.com) — A Friday morning fire in a refrigeration unit forced the busy Walmart Supercenter on Jefferson Avenue in Newport News' Denbigh area to close for the day, with reopening still uncertain. Firefighters arrived within minutes and no injuries were reported, but officials and Walmart have not yet detailed the extent of damage or confirmed whether shoppers can return Saturday.

3. Williamsburg-area cat in running for pet contest that would earn a rescue $10,000 (dailypress.com) — A Newport News cat rescue, Purhaps It's Serendipity, could receive a $10,000 grant if a former foster cat named Mittens wins a national online pet contest. Founder and vet tech Catherine Lanning cares for dozens of special-needs cats from her home and says the money would fund medical care and help launch a permanent sanctuary for hard-to-place animals.

4. Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference stretches from CNU to California, but is 'a home for everybody' (dailypress.com) — Christopher Newport University in Newport News anchors one end of the far‑flung Coast‑to‑Coast Athletic Conference, which stretches from Virginia to California and Wisconsin. The league skips regular-season conference schedules but has produced national contenders, sending CNU teams and visiting UC Santa Cruz squads across the country, including volleyball matches played in Newport News.

5. 'Camp Auschwitz' rioter from Hampton Roads released after arrest, not required to pay bond (wavy.com) — A Hampton Roads man charged in the U.S. Capitol riot was released without paying bond, and a Newport News store owner played a key role in identifying him by recognizing his sweatshirt from surveillance footage. The case, involving extremist imagery, continues in federal court while the FBI still seeks tips from the public.
