Professional Engineers Bring Real-Life Experience To South County High STEM Students

South County High students in the STEM engineering program learned about civil engineering and bridge construction from members of Engineering Tomorrow, a nonprofit organization developed by engineers to increase the number of high school students who pursue engineering degrees. Engineering Tomorrow also provided a kit for students to use for projects at home. During the first session, professional engineers talk about their experiences as engineers, engineering education at the college level, bridges, and the engineering design process. They also challenge the students to design and build a bridge at home according to certain requirements. Students must test their bridge and revise it to the correct specs. During the second session, students present their prototypes to the professional engineers, then reflect on their designs and hear feedback from the professional engineers.
