Canek Aguirre Runs For Re-Election On Alexandria City Council In 2024
Councilmember Canek Aguirre has announced a re-election campaign along with numerous candidates for City Council.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — As Alexandria City Councilmember Canek Aguirre announced a re-election bid, he joins a growing list of incumbents and newcomers in the 2024 election.
Aguirre, the first Latino elected to Alexandria City Council, is seeking a third term. According to a news release, Aguirre's priorities have been increased affordable housing funding, fully funding schools, collective bargaining agreements for public employees, a guaranteed income pilot program, increasing librarian pay, multilingual and inclusive communications from city government and support for youth and families.
"We have made many positive strides in Alexandria and I am excited to run for re-election to build upon the progress we’ve made to create a more inclusive community that ensures everyone can thrive," said Aguirre in a statement. "I am proud of my record of service to the people of Alexandria and hope to earn their trust and their vote once more."

First elected in 2018, Aguirre is chair of the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission, which provides oversight of Metro for Virginia and had two terms as chair of the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board's Access for All Advisory Committee.

Other current City Councilmembers have announced their plans for the 2024 election. Vice Mayor Amy Jackson and Councilmember Alyia Gaskins are running for mayor as Mayor Justin Wilson will not seek a new term. Councilmembers John Taylor Chapman, Sarah Bagley and Kirk McPike are running for re-election.
Other candidates include Alexandria Traffic and Parking Board chair James Lewis, Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority commissioner Kevin Harris, former magistrate Charlotte Scherer, Alexandria School Board members Abdel Elnoubi and Jacinta Greene and nonprofit leader Jesse O'Connell.
The primary election in Alexandria is scheduled for June 18, 2024, and the general election will happen on Nov. 5, 2024.
