Petersburg apartment fire displaces some Carriage House residents for the second time in months (wtvr.com) — Petersburg firefighters say a kitchen blaze at Carriage House apartments Wednesday triggered sprinklers that flooded six units, forcing residents from five occupied apartments into hotels while repairs are made. Displaced tenants were taken by city buses to the Petersburg Transit Center, where the Red Cross, city social services, and volunteers helped with food and next steps as officials review recurring safety issues at the complex.
   

2. What to bring, what not to bring to Tri-Cities recycling event (progress-index.com) — Petersburg residents can take advantage of a free regional recycling fair in nearby Colonial Heights on Sept. 26, where electronics, documents, and donations will be accepted from households. As a CVWMA member locality, Petersburg is part of the 13-community network behind this drive-thru event, which will also provide volunteers to unload items and share more ways to support local recycling efforts.
   

3. Photography and fiber art exhibitions in Old Towne Petersburg (progress-index.com) — Art lovers in Petersburg can catch two exhibits at the Petersburg Area Art League in Old Towne, featuring the Petersburg Camera Club's "Lasting Impressions 2026" photography show and the "Backstory: Allegories in Cloth" fiber art display, both running through September 5. The galleries highlight award-winning local and regional photographers and textile artists, offering residents a free, close-to-home cultural outing.
   

4. American Idol Winner and Country Music Star Chayce Beckham headlining Buffalo Trace Festival in Petersburg (duboiscountyfreepress.com) — Petersburg residents can look forward to the three-day Buffalo Trace Festival downtown this October, headlined by American Idol winner Chayce Beckham with special guest Brandon Davis on Saturday night. Running October 8–10, the event promises free live music, carnival rides, a beauty pageant, local vendors, and a beer and wine garden, with city leaders touting its growing regional draw.
   

5. Teen Charged In VSU Shooting That Injured 5 People: Report (patch.com) — A Petersburg-area community is learning more about the recent Virginia State University shooting, as a 19-year-old from Maryland has now been charged as an accessory after the fact. Police say the primary suspect was found hiding in her dorm closet after five young people were wounded near the VSU Quad Annexes, and investigators are still working to determine motives and connections.
