1. For $8 million land purchase, where will city of Roanoke get the money, and what is the future plan? (cardinalnews.org) — Roanoke officials have approved spending $8 million to buy 236 acres of the former Ole Monterey golf course, opening the door to new housing, a possible school, parks, or industrial expansion. City leaders are still deciding how to fund the purchase and stress that residents will have chances to weigh in as they balance development, park needs, and historic preservation on the site.

3. Lead Safe Roanoke is asking for lead remediation applications (wfirnews.com) — Roanoke City has secured more than $6 million to expand its Lead Safe Roanoke program, offering free lead inspections and remediation for eligible older homes where young children live or visit. With most local houses built before 1978, the program aims to fix hazards in up to 150 properties over three years, and residents can apply online if they meet income and age requirements.
   

4. Preston Park Elementary's new building gives teachers and students a fresh start (wdbj7.com) — Preston Park Elementary students and staff in Roanoke are starting the year in a brand-new, safety-focused school building that replaces their long-overcrowded facility. With brighter classrooms, better sightlines, and features like in-room bathrooms and an outdoor learning courtyard, the school is being held up as a model for how investing in Roanoke's education infrastructure can transform daily learning.
   

5. Former Walker Foundry site will soon be known as the Foundry at Norwich Town Center (wsls.com) — A long-vacant industrial site in Roanoke's Norwich neighborhood is being transformed into the Foundry at Norwich Town Center, a $50 million project with more than 100 townhomes and a restaurant. Thanks to new floodplain maps, greenway access, and a special grant providing $50,000 in down-payment help for about 50 families, the development aims to make homeownership more attainable for local working residents.
