📰 News we're reading

1. Helping Downtown Suffolk businesses stay open (wtkr.com) — Downtown Suffolk business owners are getting new support through a 10‑week Retail Catalyst program aimed at helping brick‑and‑mortar shops survive and grow. City downtown manager Lisa Bleakley stresses realistic timelines, financing plans, and stronger foot traffic, including events like Taste of Suffolk where even former storefronts like AJ's Downtown Dogs can still reach local customers via food truck.

2. 5-week trial for OB-GYN accused of performing unnecessary surgeries begins, patients and employees testify (wavy.com) — A longtime OB‑GYN who practiced in Suffolk, Chesapeake, and Portsmouth is on trial in Norfolk federal court, accused of years of unnecessary surgeries and falsified records tied to a health care fraud scheme. Prosecutors say Dr. Javaid Perwaiz induced early deliveries, backdated sterilization forms, and billed millions for questionable procedures, while jurors sift through thousands of pages of medical and financial evidence.

3. Syracuse football has pursued 2028 OL for a long time. He will visit for Clemson game. (insidetheloudhouse.com) — A standout lineman from King's Fork High School in Suffolk, Alvin Holland, is drawing major Division I attention and will visit Syracuse for its Clemson game this November. The 6-foot-4 junior already holds offers from Virginia, Virginia Tech, Penn State, and others after helping lead King's Fork to an 11-2 season. His fall visit schedule underscores how prominently Suffolk talent is appearing on recruiters' radars.

4. Researching a dark history, Virginia lawmakers seek more from universities (wvtf.org) — Suffolk appears in this statewide investigation because Virginia Tech's agricultural center here is one of six institutions under review for how college expansions displaced Black communities. Lawmakers are pressing universities to fully cooperate with the Uprooting Commission's research, which could shape future land-use policy and possible reparations. The work builds on earlier reporting about eminent domain and lost generational wealth.
