Virginia's 1,844 New Coronavirus Cases Include Backlog
The Virginia Department of Health recommends looking at cases by date of symptom onset to understand the spread of illness.
VIRGINIA — On Thursday, 1,844 new coronavirus cases were reported in Virginia, which includes a backlog of cases from Wednesday. The cumulative total of cases is 155,535, while 11,393 total hospitalizations and 3,328 deaths have been reported.
The Virginia Department of Health said 689 cases should have been reported on Wednesday. A "surveillance system reporting issue" was cited as a reason for the delay. By region, the new cases include 497 in the southwest region, 461 in the northern region, 331 in the eastern region, 284 in the central region and 271 in the northwest region.
VDH officials noted the day cases are reported does not reflect the day a person became ill but rather when their case met the definition of COVID-19. Data on cases by date of symptom onset is provided statewide and by region, although data may be incomplete for recent weeks as new information comes in. So far, the days with the most cases by symptom onset are May 18 (1,287 cases), Aug. 24 (1,244 cases), May 1 (1,209 cases) and Aug. 31 (1,200).
