PUYALLUP, WA — Tuesday's primary election will narrow the field from 19 candidates to just two, who will face off in November to replace Denny Heck in the House of Representatives in D.C.

All 10 of Washington's seats in the U.S. House of Representatives are up for election, including the one being vacated by Rep. Denny Heck, who is instead running for Lt. Governor. Cyrus Habib, the current Lt. Governor, did not seek re-election and will leave office to join the Jesuit order.

Heck has been the representative for Washington's 10th congressional district since the district was created back in 2013, but when he announced he would instead run for Lt. Governor, it created a vacuum that over a dozen candidates rushed to fill.

As of 8p.m. polls have closed in Washington and the first ballot drop for the August 2020 Primary Election has arrived. The state's top-two primary system means the two candidates with the highest number of votes move on to November's general election, regardless of their party affiliation.

In Washington, ballots are tabulated each day following the election, and percentages will continue to change in the days ahead. Results are final upon certification by the Secretary of State's office, due by Friday, Aug. 21.

This year, several of the state's top offices are also on the ballot, including the governor, attorney general and secretary of state. Secretary of State Kim Wyman, one of two Republicans serving in a statewide office, faces challengers from the Democratic Party, Progressive Party and Independent Party.
