Another Sobriety Checkpoint is Coming to NH

New Hampshire State Police and local police will be checking cars in the northwestern part of the state soon.

CONCORD, NH — The New Hampshire State Police will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint in the Newport and Sunapee region of the state sometime in the near future, according to a press statement from Lt. Joseph DiRusso of Troop C of the NHSP.

The checkpoint was requested in Superior Court and will be held in an attempt to deter, detect, and apprehend impaired drivers, he noted.

“A review of records has shown that the use of alcohol by individuals who operate motor vehicles has resulted in an alarming number of deaths and personal injury accidents,” DiRusso said. “Therefore, in an effort to maintain safe roads in Sullivan County, the New Hampshire State Police, in conjunction with the Newport and Sunapee Police Departments, will be conducting Sobriety Checkpoints in the Newport and Sunapee areas around the end of July and/or in early September.”

DiRusso, Sullivan County Attorney Marc Hathaway, Newport Police Chief James Burroughs, and Sunapee Police Chief David Cahill, are all taking “an aggressive stance to prevent persons from driving while intoxicated,” he said.
