BIRMINGHAM, AL - The week of August 20-26 saw a large number of crime stories top the headlines, but that wasn't all that happened in the Birmingham metro area. News from the week included the announcement by Birmingham-Southern College's president that she is stepping down at the end of the academic year, high school football kicked off and a man was charged in a case near Mulga involving a dog fighting operation.

A man has been officially charged in connection with a suspected dog fighting operation near Mulga in Jefferson County. Reginald Antonio Dowdell was arrested by Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies after they broke up a dog fight on Sunday. More than 17 dogs were rescued, including four with obvious dog-fighting injuries.

Birmingham-Southern president Linda Flaherty-Goldsmith announced this week she will be leaving her post at the college at the end of the academic year. She cited family health issues as her reason for leaving after more than two years at the helm of the school.
Birmingham Woman Shot To Death In Suspected Domestic Homicide
A 49-year-old woman was shot to death in her north Birmingham home Saturday morning in what police are saying was a domestic homicide case. The victim, Mia Heard, was the mother of three adult children.
The clash between the defending 7A state champions and defending 6A state champions was less of a clash than it was a run and chase. Hoover led the game the entire way en route to a 52-14 thrashing of Pinson Valley.
Woman Killed After Train Hits Vehicle In Hoover
A 35-year-old woman was killed when a vehicle in which she was a passenger was struck by a train near the Lake Wilburn neighborhood in Hoover.
