California Coronavirus: Live Updates On Reopening, Orders, Cases

Here's a roundup of all the coronavirus developments in California as of August 9.

CALIFORNIA — California passed another grim milestone this week, with deaths attributed to the coronavirus surpassing 10,000. And though much of the state remains in in some level of the stay-at-home order, residents up and down the state are suffering from lockdown fatigue.

Meanwhile, the data showing an apparent stabilization in California's coronavirus outbreak was thrown into question Tuesday, when a state health official revealed that a technical issue caused the state to undercount daily coronavirus cases.

The unspecified issue meant that the state hasn't been receiving a complete tally of positive tests or tests conducted, state Health Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said Tuesday. Now, the state's official COVID-19 dashboard has a disclaimer noting that "these data represent an underreporting of actual positive cases in one single-day."

"We've discovered some discrepancies," Ghaly told reporters Tuesday, noting that the glitch may impede efforts to investigate cases and perform contact tracing.

Optimistic projections called into question

The undercount revealed Tuesday calls into question the optimistic projections made by some top state health officials as the week began.

On Monday, Gov. Gavin Newsom proclaimed that the percentage of coronavirus tests coming back positive had dropped to an average of 7 percent over the past 14 days after hovering around 7.5 percent for much of July,.

That decline came just days after California confirmed a record 214 new deaths linked to COVID-19 on Friday, the fifth time in July that the state broke its own record.

The reporting issues aren't affecting hospitalization numbers, according to the state, suggesting that the apparent decline in the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 remains a reliable indicator.

Statewide, the number of patients hospitalized with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 cases dropped from 8,198 as of last Wednesday to 7,761 by Saturday, a 5.3 percent decrease. Intensive care admissions, too, dropped by about 4.5 percent.

Central Valley outbreak still severe

Regardless of any statewide stabilization, COVID-19 continues to ravage the largely Latino, working-class populations in the Central Valley and Imperial County, and it remains to be seen whether California's downward trajectory in cases will hold.

“We need to see another few weeks of this kind of data to come in to feel more confident about where we are as a state," Newsom said Monday.
