MARIN COUNTY, CA — Crews continue to increase containment of the Woodward Fire in Point Reyes National Seashore, which has scorched 4,538 acres and was 41 percent contained as of Wednesday.

A total of 508 firefighting personnel were assigned to the fire Wednesday, including 11 fire crews, plus 36 engines, five helicopters, five water tenders, one dozer and one masticator.

"While containment is increasing, that does not mean the interior of the fire is extinguished," the Northern Rockies National Incident Management Team 2 update said.

"Containment refers to the line around the fire. In order to be considered contained, firefighters need to feel very confident that fire will not cross that line. Reaching that level takes time and a lot of work, and has proven to be a challenge in the thick vegetation in Point Reyes National Seashore."

The fire, ignited by lightning, sparked Aug. 18 just south of the Woodward Trail, a few miles west of the Bear Valley Visitor Center in Olema and about a mile inland from Limantour Beach.

Closures

Point Reyes National Seashore remains closed to the pubic until further notice.

Coastal roadways are restricted to local traffic.

Air Conditions

Heavy smoke in recent days was mostly due to burnout operations and a heavy marine layer that held the smoke close to the ground and kept it from rising and dissipating, according to the incident management team.

Varying degrees of smoke is expected to continue but diminish over time. The presence of the marine layer and weather conditions will continue to be a factor in the degree of smoke that is experienced in the areas around the fire.
