📰 News we're reading

1. Pedestrian Struck By Vehicle In Newtown Daycare Parking Lot: Police (patch.com) — Parents and caregivers in Newtown may want to know that a woman was struck by a black SUV in the parking lot of the Children's Adventure Center on Riverside Road after dropping off her child. She reported no immediate injuries, and police say sun glare contributed to the collision; no enforcement action was taken because it happened on private property.

2. Newtown Public Schools, Newtown Police Department Launch School Bus Safety Program (newtownbee.com) — Newtown Public Schools and the Newtown Police Department have equipped all 56 district buses with stop-arm cameras and will start issuing $250 citations to drivers illegally passing stopped buses beginning October 19. Warnings are being issued through October 18 as officials urge residents to change driving habits and keep local students safe during daily bus pickups and drop-offs.

3. Two people arrested following car theft in north of Greenwich (nbcconnecticut.com) — Police in Greenwich arrested two juveniles after a pair of stolen vehicles, including one from Bethel, crashed and led to a foot chase involving drones and a K-9 unit. During the investigation, officers also recovered identification tied to a separate theft in Newtown, underscoring how regional car and property crimes can spill into local communities and why residents should secure their vehicles.

4. Tax Fraud Blotter: Making waves in Hawaii (accountingtoday.com) — A Newtown attorney, Michael Simes, has been sentenced to 10 months in prison and ordered to repay nearly $2.9 million after repeatedly failing to file returns or fully pay federal taxes on more than $5.6 million in income. His case appears alongside other national tax prosecutions, but Newtown residents may notice the local example of how long‑term noncompliance can lead to serious penalties and restitution orders.
