Stratford 2019 Local Elections: Candidates, Polling Places, Hours

STRATFORD, CT — Voters are heading to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 5, to vote in the municipal election. Spots on the Town Council, Board of Education, Planning Commission, Zoning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals are all up for grabs, as well as several constable positions.

As of about 1 p.m., voter turnout in Stratford was at 12.6 percent, with 4,512 town residents casting their ballots, Democrat Registrar Rick Marcone said.

"It's about on par as it's been in past elections," he said.

Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters who are in line before 8 p.m. will be able to vote even after the deadline passes. You can find your poll location at the Secretary of the State website by inputting your information.

Town Council

In Stratford's First District, Republican incumbent Chris Pia is up against Democrat Patrick Malley. In the Second District, incumbent Ron Tichy, a Republican, is being challenged by Democrat Kaitlyn Shake. Third District Councilman Wali Kadeem is not seeking reelection, so Democrat Paul Tavaras and Republican Victor Ayala Jr. are facing off for the seat. The Fourth District's David Harden, a Democrat, has been endorsed by both parties and is running unopposed. In the Fifth District, Democrat Greg Cann is fighting to keep his seat against Republican Lou Molnar.

Sixth District incumbent Ken Poisson, a Republican, is being challenged by Democrat Harold Watson. Republican Bill Perillo is hoping to keep his seat in a race against Democrat Timothy Bristol in the Seventh District. In the Eighth District, Council Chair Jim Connor, a Republican, is facing Democrat James Simon. Ninth District Councilman Bill O'Brien, a Republican, is unopposed. Tenth District Republican Councilwoman Laura Dancho is being challenged by Democrat Nancy Burban.

Other races

For the Board of Education, Democrats Janice Cupee and Michael Suntag and Republicans Amy Wiltsie, Alan Llewelyn and Andrea Corcoran are competing for three seats. School board members in Stratford are not allowed to serve two continuous terms, so none of the candidates are incumbents.

For the Planning Commission, Republican Sandra Zalik and Democrat Christina Kazanas are competing for Seat 1 and Republican Ed Scinto and Democrat William Boyd are seeking Seat 2.

Zoning Commission candidates include Republican Rich Fredette and Democrat James Vigiotti for Seat 1 and Republican Caz Mizera and Democrat Dion Francis for Seat 2.

For Zoning Board of Appeals, Republican Gavin Forrester and Democrat Stevenson Bruneau are running for Seat 4 and Republican Lenny Petruccelli and Democrat Steven Shapiro are seeking Seat 5.

Connecticut offers Election Day registration, but those who arrive need to be registered by 8 p.m. in order to vote. Unlike previously registered voters, standing in line before 8 p.m. to register won't guarantee the ability to vote.
