Shots Fired At Duplex Near Site Of Canton Double Homicide

Canton police said no one was home at the time of the shooting, which was reported Tuesday on Jefferson Circle.

CANTON, GA -- Canton detectives continue to investigating a shooting at a duplex in an area where two men were gunned down over the summer just outside the city's downtown district. Officers received a call of shots fired around 9:07 p.m. Nov. 14 on Jefferson Circle, which is off Crisler Street.

Officers arrived on the scene and met with witnesses, who provided cops with an idea of where the gun shots possibly originated. Those witnesses also told police a red or burgundy passenger car "fled the area as the shots were fired," Canton police said Wednesday. That car, according to the witnesses, was supposedly occupied by "several black males."

A perimeter was established in that area and officers were able to locate shell casings in the area, said police spokesperson Pacer Cordry. Evidence collected at the scene led detectives to believe the intended target was a duplex. Fortunately, residents of the apartment unit were not home at the time of the shooting," he added.

The June 25 shooting on Crisler Street near Jefferson Circle resulted in the deaths of William Kendrick Randall, 23, of Canton and 26-year-old Tony Samples of Ball Ground. Five people have been arrested and charged in connection with that incident, which police said was not a random act and took place following an altercation between two opposing groups.

“That’s obviously one of the things they are looking into,” said Cordry, when asked if detectives are working to determine if the shooting is connected to the homicides that rocked the community.

He also said they are working to determine if the incident is related to another call of shooting on July 11 that resulted in no injuries and led to the arrest of three men. The investigation into the Nov. 14 incident remains active, and anyone with information is asked to call the Canton Police Department Criminal Investigation Division at 770-720-4883, 9-1-1 or email kyle.smith@cantonga.gov.
