Hurricane Matthew: Georgia Coast Battered by Storm, Savannah River Rises

Water began pouring onto the sidewalk along the Savannah River by Friday evening as Hurricane Matthew — a storm that had left more than 1.1 million without power in Florida and killed five — moved toward the Peach State's coast.

Tropical storm and hurricane force winds were expected along the coast later Friday, along with life-threatening storm surge with the potential to do significant damage to barrier islands, according to the National Weather Service.
