On Jan. 27, Google announced plans to build fiber-optic infrastructure for up to a gigabit-per-second Internet in several cities across the U.S., including Atlanta.

According to the Google announcement “speeds up to 100 times faster than today’s basic broadband” will be available in these states.

“Paulding already has this capacity and more and it has been available for over 2 years along several development corridors,” according to David Austin, Paulding County Commission Chairman. “We actually have the infrastructure in place today for businesses requiring up to 10 gig-a-bit per second, 10 times faster than the speed of the Google project and 1,000 times faster than the basic broadband referenced on the Google’s announcement. This level of service matches or exceeds the broadband speed and capacity of almost every metropolitan area in the America.”

In 2012, Appalachian Valley Fiver Network and parent company Parker FiberNet LLC completed construction of a high-speed and capacity fiber infrastructure in Paulding County with the help of a U.S. Department of Commerce Broadband Technology Opportunities Grant and the support of the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission.

Chairman Austin also serves as the chairman of the regional commission and was an early supporter of the project. No local funds were required for the grant. Parker FiberNet provided $6 million in matching funds for the grant.

This “backbone” is considered to be an essential asset for the long-term economic development of Paulding County and the region. The fiber deployment of the network is dedicated to economic development, commercial, education, medical and government services and does not include home service at this time. The network infrastructure is capable of providing home service in the future. Without the base infrastructure this would be cost prohibitive.

The Parker FiberNet network extends across NW Georgia from I-20 north and from I-75 west, and has strategic alliances with other networks including the North Georgia Network, which can provide direct connectivity between businesses with multiple locations across 22 counties in north Georgia.

Paulding County is located at the edge of the metro area and is less than an hour drive from Atlanta, 90 minutes from Chattanooga and two hours from Birmingham, but our network can take us anywhere in the world electronically in 17 milliseconds or less, according to David Parker, founder of Parker FiberNet and AVFN. “The capacity and speed of the network s designed to be world-class. Businesses in Paulding have the capability to move the entire library of congress in less than 10 seconds.”

Chairman Austin is quick to point out his pride in Paulding’s fiber asset and work force:

“We are fortunate to have outstanding access to the global marketplace with superfast Internet and we are committed to providing the best possible environment for new business, economic development and better paying jobs. When we expand our jobs locally we give our work force more time at home and less time commuting. Our goal is to be the best place in America to live and work.”
