Georgia Beats National Average ACT Score For Second Year

For the second year in a row, Georgia students topped the national average of ACT scores.

GEORGIA — Georgia high school students scored above the national average on the ACT, according to a report from AJC. The average score for students nationally is 21, while Georgia students scored an average of 21.4 on the 36-point scale.

Last year, Georgia beat the national average for the first time with a score of 21.1 to the average of 21, and with another victorious testing season for Georgia, we can potentially see the beginning of an academic trend.

AJC reported the education department said that Georgia students outscored the national average in reading, science, math and English. 55 percent of 2017 high school graduates took the ACT, marking a jump of 9,000 additional students taking the test since 2013.

Black students averaged a score of 18.1 and Hispanic students averaged 20.5, both increases from last year's average scores.

Georgia state school superintendent Richard Woods said "Georgia students continue to increase their scores – and outpace the nation – on the ACT... This is a testament to the hard work of Georgia’s students and educators as they enjoy greater flexibility and fewer state restrictions in the classroom.”
