Douglas County School System Honored For Summer Feeding Program

The Douglas County School System took top honors in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service Turnip the Beet Program.

DOUGLASVILLE, GA — The Douglas County School System took top honors in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service Turnip the Beet Program. The awards program, launched in 2016, recognizes sponsors of Summer Meal Programs that excel at serving nutritious and appealing meals during the summer months.

While Douglas County’s School Nutrition Program shares this distinction with 19 other departments from across the state, only Douglas County and Warren County received the prestigious gold award.
The Summer Nutrition program began in 2007 and provides meals to students who may not otherwise have access to meals when school is not in session. Food Service serves summer meals at designated locations throughout the county. Breakfast includes an entrée, 100 percent fruit juice and low-fat milk, and lunch consists of a choice of an entrée, vegetable, fresh fruit and low-fat milk.

Executive School Nutrition Director Danielle Freeman says that the Nutrition Department is honored to be recognized for the district’s commitment to child nutrition: “We do not want any child in Douglas County to go hungry over the summer. There is a genuine need in our community to meet the needs of the children who do not have access to regular school meals during the summer. We are here to help bridge that gap.”
One hundred and eleven Turnip the Beet awards have been conferred nationwide. Awardees were formally announced April 18.
