Today the DVPD K-9 Unit and Officer Mike McDonald say goodbye to retired K-9 Ayko. Ayko worked for the Department from 2003 until he was retired in 2012. Since then he has been living with Mike and his family.
Ayko was one of the Department’s top K-9’s, credited with having found and caught more suspects than any other K-9 in our Department’s history. Ayko’s largest drug find was 53 kilos of cocaine (approximately $1.3 million in today’s value).

In addition to his apprehension, protection, and drug detection work, we know that Ayko made countless children smile and laugh as he interacted with them at schools and demonstrations, helping to foster good communication between children and the Department.
Please keep Officer McDonald and family in your thoughts today as he says goodbye to his loyal friend and partner who has reached his end of watch.
