Twelve GreyStone Power Corporation linemen headed east of Atlanta April 30 to help their fellow linemen at Snapping Shoals EMC. More than 6,000 of Snapping Shoals’ customers were without power that morning after severe weather hit, and linemen were faced with the task of replacing 15 broken poles. The Covington-based utility serves 95,000 customers.
That afternoon, GreyStone crews helped replace several broken poles in Conyers, the area hardest-hit by the severe storms. Crews from Cobb EMC and Central Georgia EMC were also on hand to assist with power restoration.
Electric membership corporations (EMCs) throughout the country work together following storms, and linemen sometimes travel across state lines to help restore power after major damage to power lines and equipment. When faced with a large number of power outages, electric cooperatives aim to restore power to the greatest number of members in the shortest time possible, therefore, cases where the most members are affected take priority.
