Superintendent Applauds Douglas Students For Peaceful Walkouts

Douglas students participating in Thursday's gun violence protests did so peacefully and without incident, according to the school system.

DOUGLASVILLE, GA – Douglas County students participating in Thursday’s gun violence protests did so peacefully and without incident, according to the school system.

Students at all eight middle schools and all four high school participated in the 17 minute walkout that began promptly at 10 a.m. Superintendent Trent North applauds those students for making the protests peaceful and positive.

During the walkouts, students stood in solidarity for 17 minutes, and on some campuses read the names of the 17 students killed at Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last month.

"Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies and police were present at many of the schools, but their intervention was not necessary," North said in a statement. "All students exited the classrooms peacefully at the designated time and reported to their appointed area for the peaceful protest. Students returned to their classroom and continued class instruction after the walkouts concluded."
