• Franklin County Couple Charged with Murder of Elderly Father Granted Bond (921wlhr.com) — A Franklin County couple accused in the death of an elderly relative from a Powers Road home in Lavonia has been granted bond, with strict house-arrest conditions until trial. Prosecutors allege the bedridden man was severely neglected before his August death at St. Mary's Sacred Heart Hospital, and a murder charge was added after investigators reviewed the case.
   

• U.S. Army Paratroopers Awarded St. Michael Medals on 9/11 (921wlhr.com) — Lavonia residents might be proud to know Police Corporal Jonathon Merck, who also serves in the U.S. Army, was honored with the prestigious Order of St. Michael atop Currahee Mountain on September 11. He and two fellow paratroopers from the 310th Psychological Operations Company were recognized for exceptional service and professionalism in Army aviation-related operations.
