County Approves Master Plan For Historic Chattahoochee River Park

More than 100 acres along the Chattahoochee River will be developed into an accessible Cobb County park.

MARRIETA, GA - From Cobb County Government: More than one hundred acres of wooded land along the Chattahoochee River will soon be developed into an accessible Cobb County park. Commissioners approved a master plan to develop the 103 acres plot near Mableton Parkway and Discovery Boulevard during their Tuesday night meeting.

The property runs for one mile along the river and includes a variety of well-preserved Civil War-era earthworks. A large portion of the property is on the National Register of Historic Places. Cobb County has owned the property since 1990 when it acquired it through the settlement of litigation.

The work on the park will cost approximately $1 million and is coming from the 2016 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) as part of the P.A.R.K.S. program approved by voters. P.A.R.K.S. Director Jimmy Gisi told commissioners the improvements will include a small parking lot, restrooms, signs and historical markers and possibly a small display demonstrating what a confederate Shoupade looked like. Another trail will lead to the remnants of a federal Redan.

Commissioners delayed a proposal to name the park. The area had been commonly known as "Johnston's River Line," but the Cobb County Recreation Board proposed a new name. After a flurry of emails and comments, commissioners decided to study the issue further.
