Recently Released Jail Inmate Carjacks Woman: Police

A Hyattsville man is charged with armed carjacking for allegedly stealing a car 30 minutes after he was released from jail.

A Hyattsville man just released from jail is back in custody for carjacking a woman at knifepoint in a Potomac parking lot police say.

Guaymar R. Cabrera-Hernandez, 24, of the 8000 block of 14th Street in Hyattsville was charged Aug. 19 with armed carjacking, armed robbery, and first-degree assault, according to Montgomery County Police.

A 38-year-old woman reported she was in her vehicle in the parking lot of the Islamic Education Center on Aug. 17 when Cabrera-Hernandez approached her car. The driver’s side window was down and Cabrera-Hernandez allegedly placed a knife to the victim’s neck and demanded that she get out of the car. As the woman got out of the car, Cabrera-Hernandez threw a brick at her, then sped out of the parking lot.

Detectives noted that the Montgomery County Detention Center at 1307 Seven Locks Road is less than a mile from the location of the carjacking. Investigators asked about inmates who had recently been released from the facility and learned that Cabrera-Hernandez had been released from custody about 30 minutes before the carjacking. The carjacking victim identified a photograph of Cabrera-Hernandez as the suspect who stole her vehicle.

The stolen car was found crashed on Aug. 19 near River Road and Little Falls Parkway in Bethesda. The suspect was found in Washington, D.C. near the Montgomery County line and was taken into custody by the Metropolitan Police Department. During an interview with Montgomery County Police, Cabrera-Hernandez reportedly admitted to committing the Potomac carjacking.
