Former Legislative Candidate Charged with 34 Theft Counts

An unsuccessful candidate for the Maryland state legislature -- who campaigned on integrity -- has been charged with dozens of counts of theft from a school booster club.

Steven D. Wyatt, 43, Linthicum, was charged with 34 counts of theft of less than $1,000, as well as one count each of participating in a theft scheme, embezzlement and making prohibited campaign expenditures, according to online court records.

Wyatt is the former president of the North County High School Athletic Boosters Association. The club was disbanded after it failed to meet financial disclosure requirements, reports the Capital-Gazette. School officials told police about 30 unauthorized cash withdrawals for hundreds of dollars were mad using a club debit card Wyatt had.

Three charges for $3,455 were made on the card to Mission BBQ and Leadership Anne Arundel, as well, the newspaper says.

Wyatt ran in 2014 for the House of Delegates in District 32. He was the vice president of the District 32 Democratic Club. He finished last in a field of six Democrats in the primary election.

According to CenterMaryland.org, Wyatt campaigned as a supporter of public education, veterans benefits and transparency in government. He said he would make integrity a key part of his office if elected.
